Bastille Days

Bastille Days returns July 14-17, 2011. Bastille Days is North America's largest outdoor French themed festival held in downtown Milwaukee in Cathedral Square Park. 2011 marks our 30th Anniversary and we plan to celebrate with all the old favorites and some new twists! Enjoy a variety of entertainment options, roaming minstrels, activities for the kids, great food and much more! You could even enter to win a Trip to Paris!

Also new this year is the Bastille Days Wine Tasting! Sample some delicious varietals from California, France and beyond!

General Information

Bastille Days is located in Downtown Milwaukee and centered around Cathedral Square Park, providing a unique setting that both residents and visitors of East Town, always find charming.

The festival began in 1982 as a way to promote the downtown business district and encourage visitors to explore this neighborhood. At the time, the President of the East Town Association was a French transplant to Milwaukee and the group decided to create a festival that celebrates the French heritage present in Milwaukee. Today Milwaukee is known affectionately as the city of festivals and a variety of ethnicities are represented throughout the summer.

The event is known for the impromptu street performers, roaming minstrels, a variety of interactive and musical entertainment, and the signature 43-foot Eiffel Tower replica. Bastille Days also boasts a wide variety of some of the best restaurant vendors in Milwaukee!

Visitors to Bastille Days are invited to explore this Parisian playground, participate in mini-French lessons, see an authentic French mass, listen to local, regional and national bands, laugh at the spills and thrills of the Waiter/Waitress race and make sure to have a beignet before heading home.

Of course it wouldn't be Bastille Days if there weren't a Storming of the Bastille, which in Milwaukee translates into a 5k "fun run" which kicks off the festival each year on the Thursday evening at 9pm.

Festival hours are 11am to 11pm Thursday through Saturday and 11am to 9pm on Sunday.

The festival is free and open to the public.

Summerfest 2011 will take place June 29 - July 3 and July 5 - 10, from Noon until Midnight daily. Summerfest will be closed on Monday.

The World's Largest Music Festival and Milwaukee's cornerstone summer celebration attracts the music industry's hottest stars, along with emerging talent and local favorites. The 23,000 capacity Marcus Amphitheater, 10 additional stages, diverse selection of food and beverages, marketplaces and interactive exhibits are set against the Lake Michigan and downtown backdrop, creating a festival experience like no other.

Spring Gallery Night and Day - April 15 and 16, 2011

Presented by the Historic Third Ward Association, the 23-year-old Gallery Night and Day is the premier art event in Milwaukee for both the experienced art connoisseur and most beginning admirer. An evening of gallery hopping and art viewing begins Friday, April 15 and continues during the day on Saturday, April 16. This Spring, the quarterly event showcases 57 venues throughout the downtown Milwaukee area. Admission is free to all venues during event hours listed below.

Parking and Transportation

Parking in the Historic Third Ward parking structures is just $2 from 5pm Friday (4/15) through 5pm on Saturday (4/16). Structures are located at 212 N. Milwaukee St. and 225 E. Chicago St.

Catch the free Friday Gallery Night Xpress and enjoy a six-stop route which will take you from the Third Ward to East Town and back. The 14-passenger bus makes a continuous loop from 5 to 9pm Friday with stops approximately every 15 minutes.

2) CHARLES ALLIS ART MUSEUM – (1801 N. Prospect Ave. - 414.278.8295 - charlesallis.org) The Charles Allis: 100 Years. The Charles Allis: 100 Years features dynamic, multi-sensory installations that invite the viewer to experience the Charles Allis Mansion as never before. Created by six Wisconsin artists, the exhibition is part celebration of the Mansion's Centennial and part re-interpretation of the collection, the history of the building, and the space within. 3) DEAN JENSEN GALLERY – (759 N. Water St. - 414.278.7100 - deanjensengallery.com) Murmurings of the Trees: An Installation by Joan Backes. The gallery has been transformed into an enchanted, kind of Alice In Wonderland woods, the centerpieces of which is a small, but habitable cottage that glows with the mysterious light of the moon. Inside the magical residence is a collection of treasures that might belong to some unknown archivist. Elsewhere in the setting are artist-made trees, paintings and Lilliputian-sized houses. Like all her installations, Backes' Murmurings of the Trees seems to ask us to walk more lightly in what is left of the natural world. A native of Milwaukee, Backes now lives in the Boston area and has received commissions for her installations from art institutions in various corners of the world. Murmurings of the Trees is her second solo show at the Dean Jensen Gallery. Friday: 10am to 9pm, Saturday: 10am to 4pm

Spotlights three large-scale signage-inspired paintings used to attract audiences to itinerant theatrical performances by local musicians and actors in Ghana. Exhibitions run through May 22, 2011. 6) INOVA (INSTITUTE OF VISUAL ARTS) UW-MILWAUKEE, PECK SCHOOL OF THE ARTS (2155 N. Prospect Ave. - 414.229.5070 - arts.uwm.edu/inova) Samuel Williams. A British artist working primarily in sculpture and video, Williams' work tends to focus on limitations of materials and time. For this exhibition, Inova will fully engage the Artist's inventive capabilities, and the limitations of his living in a country an ocean away. Williams will send instructions for one sculpture to be made each day that the gallery is open through May 22nd. A collection of volunteers will sign on to help realize these works, gradually filling up the gallery at the pace of one sculpture per day. Exhibition through June 19. 7) KATIE GINGRASS GALLERY – (241 N Broadway - 414.289.0855 - gingrassgallery.com) Au Naturel. To be "au naturel" is to be stripped down, brought back to the simplest form. But it is also a metaphor for a fresh start. And as the last piles of snow slowly disappear and the crisp scent of spring starts to fill the air, we look at both definitions combined. It only seems natural, now, to hang a show that brings with it a feeling of rejuvenation and a new beginning. With Au Naturel, we present a collection of nature-inspired art in a variety of media. 10) TORY FOLLIARD GALLERY – (233 N. Milwaukee St. - 414.273.7311 - toryfolliard.com) Mark Mulhern - New Paintings & Works on Paper. This comprehensive group of new work by Mark Mulhern reflects his ongoing interest in the figure and still life. Introspective but unselfconscious, the work is filled with subtle gestures and freely painted locations that invite contemplation on the part of the viewer. Inspired by travel, visits to the beach, and every day people; large paintings, monotypes and drawings are included in this exhibition. Tory Folliard Gallery has proudly represented the work of Mark Mulhern since 1990. New Work is Mulhern's seventh solo show with the gallery. Meet the artist on Gallery Night! 11) VILLA TERRACE DECORATIVE ARTS MUSEUM – (2220 N. Terrace Ave. - 414.271.3656 - villaterracemuseum.org) Formed. Karen Gunderman and Linda Wervey-Vitamvas, both of Milwaukee, are ceramics artists whose work evokes anatomical and biological forms. Gunderman draws on the early history of botany and a sense of wonderment in exploring the mysteries of life. Wervey-Vitamvas combines peculiar anatomical shapes with medical and surgical tools to investigate an uneasy relationship between the body's internal spaces and the examination and viewing of these hidden places. 12) WALKER’S POINT CENTER FOR THE ARTS – (839 N. 5th St. - 414.672.2787 - wpca-milwaukee.org) Carlos Cortéz and Allied Artists. Exhibit of prints based around the revolutionary Carlos Cortéz. A former Milwaukee artist who moved to the Pilsen area of Chicago, Cortéz produced prints that focused on human rights, immigration issues, celebrations, poetry and the plight of workers. Included in the exhibition is work from Cortéz and artists he influenced, including a handful from the WWIII Co-op as well as the Just Seeds Co-op. This show was organized from private and public collections with the assistance of Susan Simensky Bietila. Exhibition April 1 through May 15. Friday: 5 to 9pm, Saturday: 12 to 5pm

General Information:: The Milwaukee St. Patrick's Day Parade will take place on March 12, 2011 at Noon in Downtown Milwaukee!
Description:: Building on a successful partnership, the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin and the Westown Association, along with presenting sponsor Miller Lite, are collaborating on Wisconsin's oldest and largest St. Patrick's Day celebration.

Although the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin is celebrating its 45th anniversary of producing the parade, the event actually dates back to 1843. Milwaukee's parade is the sixth oldest in the nation.

This year's parade will feature over 150 units including Irish dance groups, pipe and drum corps, and local celebrities and dignitaries.

Join the Shamrock Club of Wisconsin's Milwaukee Chapter for the 45th Annual St. Patrick's Day Parade on Saturday, March 12, 2011. The parade steps off in Downtown Milwaukee at noon. It then lines Wisconsin Avenue from 3rd to Plankinton, up Plankinton to Old World Third Street and down Juneau to Water Street. There will be pipe bands, Irish cultural groups, music, and more. With over 160 units, it is a spectacle not to be missed.
